The Quiet Place
After paining walls, scrubbing floors, hanging blinds, and obtaining furniture, carpeting
and computers through donations and purchases, Casa de Providencia was ready to open an
after-school program called "The Quiet Place" by late October 2005. Why did this come about
and why this particular name?
|
|
|
During the summer months, 4-6 children from the neighborhood began coming to Casa to use the
computer lab and the internet during set times and with supervision. At one point the children were
asked, "If an afterschool
|
|
program were started here at Casa, how would you want it to look and operate?" Suggestions
started coming forth with little hesitation. They wanted a place to study and get help with
their homework. They wanted a place to play board . They wanted a place to read books.
Above all, they wanted it to be a "quiet place!" Thus, the concept was born and a name was given.
|
|
"The Quiet Place" now has 6 rooms/areas - a reading room with shelves of books and some handheld
, a table area with various board , a computer room, with 4 computers for
having fun, a study room with individual study carrels and a computer with printer for typing
reports, and a room for chats and meetings. Volunteers work one-on-one with the children.
If you'd like to have some fun and meet some interesting young
people, please consider volunteering at "The Quiet Place."
